Perodua Myvi SE 1.5 and Extreme launched

|

Friday, September 16, 2011

After rounds and rounds of spyshots, this time, it’s the real thing. Moments ago, Perodua officially launched the much anticipated Myvi SE 1.5 which is a new Myvi with a 1.5-litre engine, the biggest capacity lump that has ever been put into the popular hatchback.
And if the new Myvi launched in June is called “Lagi Best” (34,000 people agree and have booked the car) the Myvi SE’s tagline is “Lagi Power, Lagi Best”, referring to the bigger 1.5L engine powering the car.

There’s also the Myvi Extreme 1.5, a name which we broke last week. The Extreme is essentially the same car as the SE, but with a more extreme bodykit and some added kit. It can be immediately recognised by the grey lower lip missing on the SE.
At the back, the Extreme gets a unique bumper, a more elaborate spoiler and chrome door handles. The new seven-spoke rim design and grille insert are shared by both.

Both the SE and Extreme are available with a four-speed auto gearbox or a five-speed manual. Prices range from RM50,900 for the SE manual to RM61,700 for the Extreme auto, figures that are lower than some have speculated. To recap, the Myvi 1.3 range starts from RM43,900 and tops out at RM57,400 for the 1.3 Elegance auto.

Myvi Extreme (white) easily identified via grey bumper lip, fog lamp housing has less bars

Let’s start with the heart of the matter. The SE and Extreme are powered by a 1.5-litre twin-cam engine with DVVT. This is the 3SZ-VE engine used in the Alza, and not the 1NZ-FE from the Toyota Vios. The chain driven (timing chain, not belt) engine puts out 102 hp at 6,000 rpm and 136 Nm of torque from 4,400 rpm, a 12 hp/19 Nm jump from the Myvi 1.3.
While this is lower than the Vios’ 108 hp/141 Nm, the Myvi 1.5 (at 970 to 995 kg) is lighter than that sedan, and Perodua’s power-to-weight ratio charts sees the SE beat the “Model SS” (Suzuki Swift), “Model V” (Vios) and “Model P” (Persona).

Rear bumper design is unique for each variant, Extreme gets a more elaborate spoiler

Lagi power eh? The Myvi 1.5′s acceleration is not to be scoffed at – the SE manual does the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 9.98 seconds, which is very swift. To compare, a BMW 320i Sport does the same sprint in 9.8 secs, so don’t play play! The Myvi SE auto is timed at 12.49 seconds. So 2.0L sedan owners, don’t be too surprised if that pesky yellow thing runs neck-to-neck with you in the traffic light GP!
As for fuel consumption, Perodua claims 15.9 km/l for the manual and 12.9 km/l for the auto. These figures are slightly down from the 1.3L, but are still better than competing national cars, says P2.

All black interior and steering buttons are standard, Extreme gets leather seats and tinting

Inside, the Myvi 1.5 gets an all black dashboard and interior, unlike the dual-tone scheme on the standard car. The steering wheel is now wrapped in leather, and there are audio controls on the left spoke, a first in Myvi history. The front seats are also unique – Perodua calls them “semi bucket seats”.
Start the car and you’ll also realise that the Camry style instruments – orange illumination in 1.3 Standard, turquoise in the Premium/Elegance – is now in red, with white for the needles and trip computer. The dial design is also slightly different and there are chrome rings thrown in. The plastic surround for the meter panel is now in sliver.

Myvi 1.5 instruments are in red and white, design is different, chrome ring added

The Myvi SE comes with the “flush type” audio system as seen in the Myvi 1.3 Premium. This one has Bluetooth, USB and the a sliver carbon fibre look, but the backlight is now red to match the instruments.
The full colour DVD touch screen system with navigation found in the Myvi 1.3 Elegance is an option for the SE automatic and standard on the Myvi Extreme.
The other additional kit that are exclusive to the Myvi Extreme include leather seat covers (with Extreme badge on the front seat backs), Extreme carpet mats (driver’s mat comes with locks to keep it in place), and window tint. These are in addition to the exterior differences mentioned and shown above.

All-new Suzuki Kizashi now open for registration

|

Saturday, June 11, 2011

The year 2011 will see many exciting new models for the Malaysian market. One of them will be a new sedan by Suzuki.

This month itself, Suzuki Malaysia Automobile (SMA) will be unveiling a completely new C-segment model, rivaling the current boring models in the market such as the Toyota Corolla Altis, Honda Civic, the not-so-new models like Chevrolet Cruze, Proton Inspira and Mazda3.

Yes, for the first time ever, SMA is bringing in a new sedan challenger – the all-new Suzuki Kizashi. The name itself sounds like a typical Japanese ninja but in terms of styling, the sedan’s face pretty much resembles the one from the previous Volkswagen Golf hatchback.

New (big) kid coming to a city near you!

We are still unsure of the specs of the Kizashi when it launches this month January but I am anticipating it will come with a 2.0litre engine. My guess is such because SMA failed to capture the market with its SX4 sedan when it launched in 2008, which led to its Crossover version being quite a favourite for local Malaysian female drivers. Hence, I would presume SMA is giving another shot in at least taking a piece of the sedan market with a higher specced car with bigger dimensions.

From now until the actual launch of the Suzuki Kizashi, here at Essential Motoring 101 blog is proud to announce that registrations for the new sedan is now open.

Register your details in the form below if you would like to book the car, test drive or even request for more information. I assure you that your information will be held strictly confidential and will not be sold to any third parties.

Suzuki has officially revealed the 2010 Kizashi mid-sized sedan, that is offered in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive forms. Based on the Kizashi Concept that was previewed two years ago, the mid-size sedan is treated to a large prominent grille up front with curvaceous design lines under the projector beam headlights, which is also evident at the rear end. There are two exhaust tailpipes as well, on each side. The Kizashi also sits on the ground with 18-inch alloy wheels, treated to a multi-spoke design.

Powertrain

Built at Suzuki's brand-new manufacturing facility in Sagara, Japan, the 2010 Kizashi is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine offering a more potent standard engine than many competitive best-sellers. The engine employs both an aluminum block and cylinder heads, providing a lightweight installation; aluminum pistons with low tensile force rings deliver improved power and efficiency. Dropped-forged connecting rods, rotating on a forged steel crankshaft, contribute to the inline four's durability, and a balancer shaft delivers improved engine balance and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The responsive inline four is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, for heightened performance in the low gears, along with relaxed and economical cruising capability in the higher gears. Customers may opt for an available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that delivers both the driving experience and fuel efficiency today's consumers demand, while not compromising the character preferred by driving enthusiasts. That character is enhanced with paddle shifters, optimizing driver control regardless of speed or driving environment. With either transmission choice, the Suzuki Kizashi is engineered to return competitive fuel economy numbers for fuel-conscious consumers.

In addition to this excellent new powertrain, and to even further enhance the Suzuki Kizashi's strong efficiency story, Suzuki is developing an even more fuel efficient hybrid version that will be added to the lineup in the future.

Braking and Handling

In order to successfully enter a field already saturated with countless nondescript transportation appliances, Suzuki breaks away from traditional values normally associated with the mainstream, standing firm on Suzuki's belief in delivering a dynamic and exhilarating driving experience. That driving experience was validated on Germany's Autobahn, Switzerland's Alpine twisties, cobblestone roads of rural England and the legendary Nrburgring.

Suzuki Kizashi's thoughtfully crafted exterior design is best described as the seamless melding of European style and Japanese craftsmanship. Tailored for the driving enthusiast, Suzuki Kizashi's bold and aggressive stance is complemented by available 18-inch alloy wheels; contemporary styling with its lean proportion and minimal front overhang injects the sophistication appropriate to a performance-oriented sport sedan. As with the Suzuki Kizashi Concept series, the front end of the production Suzuki Kizashi expresses both strength and style, while the vehicle's impeccably engineered body reflects Suzuki Kizashi's underlying strength and distinctive combination of capability and refinement.

Suzuki has taken advantage of its expertise in the compact car segment to efficiently execute larger yet still tidy proportions that afford comfort and practicality without the wasted space. Along with cabin proportions that reward Suzuki Kizashi drivers and passengers with comfort and roominess, Suzuki pursues a contemporary, upscale interior feel such as standard sport seats in line with the vehicle's on-road performance characteristics. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate Suzuki Kizashi's sporty and elegant instrument panel, while consumers seeking a luxury sedan will be pleased with the vehicle's available leather seating, featuring high-density foam and premium quality materials rivaling upscale competitors.

Traction and Safety

The all-new Suzuki Kizashi includes a class-leading list of standard safety equipment, including class-exclusive standard eight airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, projector beam headlamps and a tire pressure monitoring system. Also included as equipment on the Kizashi is Suzuki's developed synergetic vehicle dynamic control. This system assists drivers control and a fun-to-drive experience with minimal intrusiveness.

2011 Mitsubishi Evo X SE

|

Friday, June 3, 2011

The 2011 Mitsubishi Evo X SE trim level adds to the GSR the following options: two-piece Brembo front brake rotors, Xenon HID headlamps, Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs, a rear lip spoiler and Heated Recaro bucket seats. We're not sure why they believe the rear lip is better than the full rear wing. The 2011 Mitsubishi Evo X SE would look much better with the wing.

Apart from these options, the new 2011 Mitsubishi Evo X SE also comes with the high-contrast multi-color LCD instrument display, Bluetooth and a leather trimmed interior.

The 2011 Mitsubishi Evo X SE price will be announced at a later date.

Automotive media and car enthusiasts the world over have long considered the Lancer Evolution to be one of the best - if not the greatest - 4-door sports sedan of all time. Landing at dealer showrooms in Fall of 2011, the motoring masses will be able to welcome a new member to Mitsubishi Motor's awe-inspiring family.

Slotting between the Lancer Evolution GSR and the top-flight MR Touring models is the exciting all-new limited edition 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution SE - the SE standing for "Special Edition," which borrows many of the best features from both models to create what may be the ultimate Evolution.

Key performance components carried over from the top-of-the-line MR edition to the SE version include the ultra-high performance suspension package that employs Eibach springs and Bilstein shock absorbers, two-piece Brembo front brake rotors with remarkable stopping power and Mitsubishi's lightning-fast Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) that allows for split-second gear shifts via either steering wheel paddle shifters or the shift lever without a clutch pedal.

Gone are the small (GSR) and large (MR) wings atop the rear deck lid; like the MR touring model, the new Evo SE makes use of a small, less conspicuous lip spoiler. Other highlights include brightly illuminating HID headlights and a choice of four colors - Graphite Gray, Wicked White, Phantom Black and Octane Blue.

Heated cloth RECARO seats and exclusive "SE" badging round out the Lancer Evolution SE's unique packaging, one that provides a very high degree of speed and agility in a visually more discreet and affordable package.

While remaining true to the core values that have made the Lancer Evolution synonymous with thrilling performance, the next-generation.
2011 model offers new premium features and user technology options for a more refined driving experience.

The 2011 Lancer Evolution showcases the latest performance and handling technology, including an all-aluminum 291-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled engine and the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) dynamic handling system. S-AWC regulates the drive torque at each wheel by controlling a network of advanced dynamic handling technologies including Active Center Differential (ACD) 4-wheel-drive, Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential, Active Stability Control (ASC) and sport ABS brakes. A helical gear-type limited-slip front differential is used.

The 4B11 DOHC in line 4-cylinder engine, based on a reinforced cast-aluminum cylinder block, employs a direct-acting valvetrain for reduced weight and MIVEC variable valve timing is used on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The rear-located (firewall side) stainless steel exhaust manifold helps improve overall weight distribution.

A shark-nosed front end inspired by jet fighter air intakes, a distinct wedge-like profile, and crisp and taut lines highlight the Lancer Evolution's signature face and profile. New for 2011 are updated larger side air dams, tail lamps with black extensions and a short pole 200 mm antenna. Its unique front end, aggressively sloping hood with integral air scoop and engine heat outlets, boxed fenders and 18-inch wheels impart the Lancer Evolution with the look of the street-wise sports machine.

The Lancer Evolution features its own distinct suspension system, including inverted struts in front and a rear multi-link configuration, with numerous forged aluminum components to help reduce unsprung weight. The 18 x 8.5-inch wheels (Enkei cast-alloy on the GSR and BBS forged-alloy on the MR) are shod with large (245/40R18) tarmac-grabbing Yokohama ADVAN asymmetrical performance tires at all four corners.

Adding a dash of even more comfort and civility, the 2011 Lancer Evolution features many new revisions for improved everyday driving. A new high-contrast multi-color LCD instrument meter enhances visibility while a leather-clad parking brake lever with chrome release button adds a premium touch. The MR model receives an additional premium touch - Phantom Black interior accents.

Reflecting the tastes of the ever-broadening Evolution customer base, a hands-free Bluetooth cell phone interface system is now standard as well as an MP3 auxiliary input jack for all models, while available User technologies include a Rockford Fosgate audio and navigation system with music server.

Standard safety features include an advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, standard front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags, plus a driver's knee airbag.

Three other Lancer Evolution models will be offered in the U.S. for 2011: the GSR with a five speed manual transmission; the Lancer Evolution MR that is equipped with a 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) - an automated manual transmission with magnesium steering wheel shifter paddles and a console shifter - Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs, two-piece Brembo front brake rotors, BBS forged-alloy wheels and HID headlamps; and the MR Touring model, more comfortably equipped for everyday use with a power glass sunroof, leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, rear lip spoiler, insulated front windshield glass and improved sound insulation.
